Prestressed Concrete: What is it? Is it important?

Prestressed concrete is a form of reinforced concrete that is significantly prestressed or tensioned during construction. It is a structural building system that bears calculated engineering stresses to be placed in locations to compensate for loads. This is a combination of high concrete compressive strengths and the high tensile strength of steel when stressed. First introduced in the late nineteenth century by a civil structural engineer by the name of Eugene Freyssinet in France, this system was implemented in such a manner that it strengthened concrete against tensile forces which occurred when in use. Since then, the prestressed concrete technique installation has only grown worldwide and is used internationally.

There are two kinds of prestressed concrete we at Los Angeles Deputy Special Inspection are familiar with: pre-tensioned and post-tensioned. These tendons can be tensioned as a mono-strand (stressed individually for each strand of wire) or multi-strand (stressed simultaneously for all wires or strands in a tendon). Tendons may be located either in the concrete or completely outside of the concrete. Pre-tensioned concrete uses tendons directly embedded in the concrete, while post-tensioned concrete can be used for either option. We will go over a bit of this to give you and any potential clients that are reading this and idea of how prestressed concrete works.

Deputy Special Inspections for Pre-Tensioned Concrete

Pre-tensioned concrete is a type of prestressed concrete where the tendon strands are stressed before concrete is placed. When the concrete finally sets  with the tendons still in tension, the stress at the dead-end anchors are released, causing the tension to be transferred to the concrete. Pre-tensioned concrete is typically used for the fabrication of elevated slab decks, balconies, structural beams, lintels, water tanks, concrete pipes, etc.

Pre-tensioning is a typical prefabrication system where a final concrete section or segment is made in a different location and transported to a site and erected once fully cured and deemed acceptable. This allows multiple segments to be built and can be very convenient in locations where cast in place concrete and post tensioned operations are not realistic.

Deputy Special Inspections for Post-Tensioned Concrete

Post-tensioned concrete is another kind of prestressed concrete where the tendons undergo tension after concrete has been fully cured. It is vital that concrete reaches a minimum psi (typically noted on the approved structural plans) prior to tensioning to prohibit any damage of newly installed concrete or any fatal injuries to nearby workers or pedestrians alike. In order to verify that concrete has obtained the minimum psi per city approved plans, concrete cylinders are sampled during placement. Typically, these same samples are transported the next day to the lab and tested per a set schedule. We understand that some projects request early breaks in order to strip forms and start building the next section of the project. We at Los Angeles Deputy Special Inspection are willing and able to provide you these services.
